Basic Machine Knitting Tools

Machine knitting tools are a little different from hand knitting. The knitting machine has a bed of latch hook type needles, which knit the stitches when the carriage is moved back and forth.

Sometimes there is a misconception that machine knitting isn't as involved as hand knitting but machine knitting can be as involved with the manual manipulation of stitches as you wish. Creating cable stitches for example can be basic or complex with the tools seen in the picture below, transferring and twisting stitches as you knit your fabric.

These are some of the basic tools used for machine knitting:

Needle Pushers they look like rulers. You can use these to select and push your needles into the required positions.

Transfer Tools have either 1x2 or 1x3 prongs with eyelets and the double eye transfer tool, to hook onto the latch needles to transfer stitches etc.

Latch/Tappet Tool looks like the hook and latch needle on the bed, used to cast on and off and for other uses.

Hook Tool this is useful for catching the yarn when there's a narrow space or to lift stitches.

Brush for cleaning and dusting off yarn fibers underneath the carriage and the needle bed.

Claw Weights these help to bring your knitted fabric down as you're knitting so that all of your stitches stay in place on the latch hook needles.
